Junior Red Cross
The Indian Red Cross Society conducted a special programme and for the first time selected 25 Mentally Challenged children as Ist Junior Red Cross Unit for the special children . On 14th March 2010 they also conducted drawing, singing, and dance competitions in our institution. Our Junior Red Cross children accepted the Motto of the Red Cross – health, service and friendship. They are happy to be the members of the Junior Red Cross .
Tour and Enjoyments
Every year we are taking the children to Courtalam a water falls area. We stay there for 4 days. Ever day we took the children to different water falls and help them to take bath there. At the water falls, the police department help us very much. We also take them to the park and snake park and all the children enjoy the days very well. Their stay at Courtalam and bathing in the water falls makes them energetic and the herbal water induces their brain activity and they feel hale and healthy.
National Day for the Mentally Retarded
Every year on December 8th we are celebrating the National Day for the Mentally Retarded with the help of the Human Rights Organization. We conduct an awareness programme and a rally. Nearly 400 mentally challenged children from various institutions in our district and their parents take part. All the children are given new clothes and also special food. Our District Differently Abled welfare officer Mr. T. Manohar also gives a talk on special government schemes for the differently abled.
World Volley Ball day Celebration
World Volley Ball day was celebrated. The Tirunelveli District Volley Ball president and secretary arranged a volley ball tournament for the special children for the first time. It was conducted in the Ann stadium. Special children from three districts participated. It was inaugurated by the Tirunleveli District Collector Thiru.M.JeyaRaman I.A.S. in the presence of Mr.T.Manohar, Our District Differently Abled Welfare Officer and the District sports officer conducted the volley ball tournament. This volley ball tournament encourages our children and they too feel very happy. When we provide such opportunity they also develop competencies and emotions of success as do normally developing children.
Sports and Games
Many Differently Abled – mentally retarded children are interested in playing sports such as Cricket, Throw ball, Volleyball, Hand ball and other ball games. During school days in a particular timetabled session children play games systematically. They Participate at District Level sports meets and win Prizes.
On 10th October, the Indian Red Cross Society and the District Differently Abled Officer joined together and conducted a sports meet for the Differently Abled children of 3 districts. 12 special schools from 3 districts were participating. Our children won prizes in cycling, running, Long jump and sack race. On November 17th 2009 The World Disabled Day was celebrated and a sports meet for all the Differently Abled persons were held at the Florence Swainson School for the Deaf. At this meet also our children participated and won 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes in running and Long Jump. These sports activities make the children feel normal and improve their self esteem.
